Story

The Ash Contract

Wars used to last years. Now they last three minutes.

The last war left no winner. Cities burned. Ash fell for months. The surviving powers could not afford another campaign, so they signed a treaty instead: eleven seals on one document. People call it the Ash Contract.

Every dispute is settled the same way. 3 vs 3. Three minutes. The winning team takes the clause — water, power, a trade route, sometimes a person's name. The fighters who sign are called Gunners.

Sign, and you get a recall brand. Die in a match and you come back in three seconds. Each recall costs from your contract balance. Outside the arena, death is final. That is why Gunners say the safest place left is standing in a rain of bullets.

The contract issues jetpacks and drops heal packs on the field. Matches run on four arenas: Industrial Front, Night Jungle, Sunlight Factory, and Desert Ruins, where the treaty was signed. Today's teammate can be tomorrow's enemy. For three minutes, you still watch their back.

Fighters

Four fighters. Four ways to win.

Each fighter brings a distinct weapon and skill. Each signed the Ash Contract for a different reason.

Ironclad

Ironclad

The Last Door

"Five seconds. Get through."

Heavy MG tank. Hold the line.

FortifyIron Skin

The soldier who held Shelter Door 3 on Collapse Day. He still fights so that district stays on the map.

Read story

On Collapse Day he was the NCO holding underground Shelter Door 3. His company did not make it. He jammed his shield into the frame for forty minutes and kept the door standing. Forty-seven people got through. That number is still carved inside the shield.

He did not sign the Ash Contract for medals. The district those people live in comes up as a clause every season. He puts his name on the paper again. Win the match, and the district lasts another season. That is his pay.

A Heavy MG makes him slow. He does not treat that as a flaw. First to the fight does not matter. Last one standing does. Fortify turns him into a door for five seconds — long enough for a reload and a step back.

He talks little on a team. He covers Phantom and does not look back. He tells Blitz to breathe. He gets angry when Junk blows out the floor. If the ground is gone, there is nothing left to hold. His contract has two seasons left. He has not told the team.

Phantom

Phantom

The Erased Name

"One shot is enough. Two is a mistake."

Sniper. Reposition, land the shot.

CloakGhost Step

A sniper who killed negotiators until the treaty was signed. The contract is the only name she has left.

Read story

Before the treaty, seats at the table were chosen with a rifle. Phantom did that work. Three talks fell apart after one of her shots. The fourth talk signed the Ash Contract.

When peace came, people like her were not allowed to exist. Her name was blacked out, her prints were burned, and the office that hired her said it had never been there. No identity means no recall brand. No brand means a real death. She signed so she could keep coming back.

Cloak is the old job under new rules. Stop. Hold your breath. Ghost Step. One shot. A second shot means the first one missed.

She likes fighting behind Ironclad. He does not turn around. Junk's noise is cover. Blitz is too loud to make sense of. She has been seen in the contract archive after hours. She is still looking for who blacked out her file.

Blitz

Blitz

Blockade Runner

"Don't stop. Stopping is the end."

Rush machine gun. Close the gap.

StimAdrenaline

A blockade courier who signed to pay a debt. He runs every match like the interest is still catching up.

Read story

He ran his first blockade at fourteen. The pack held letters, medicine, ammo, and other people's debt papers. Between districts there was one rule: do not stop. A stopped courier is a corpse.

Debt got him to the Contract first. After three districts failed to pay his courier fees, he signed terms that started his balance in the red. Wins pay it down. Losses and recalls add to it. So he only runs forward.

Stim is not medicine. It is what he used to sell on the lines, and now he uses it himself — heart one beat ahead, legs a little farther. Adrenaline is harsher. The more he is hit, the faster he gets. A machine gun fits the same habit: close range, fast, done.

He and Junk cannot stand a quiet match. He calls Ironclad "old man," and only slows down when that shield goes up. Standing next to Phantom, the back of his neck goes cold. He does not count the debt. Counting slows you down.

Junk

Junk

The Wrecker

"A wall isn't a wall. It's an angle."

Grenade launcher. Mines, arcs, chaos.

MinefieldRicochet

A demolition hand who knows how cities break. He signed to watch the Contract do it on a timer.

Read story

After the ash settled, demolition crews cleared the city — not the army. Junk was the youngest on his crew. Ten years of cutting wreckage taught him one thing: every building already has a break point. You just have to hit it.

The Contract wanted a blaster. He signed to watch from the inside. He thinks the Ash Contract does not repair cities. It breaks them on a schedule, three minutes at a time.

In his hands a grenade launcher is a cleanup tool. Ricochet is math, not luck. He reads the bounce that puts a shot behind someone. Minefield is not a warning. It is a new line on the map.

If Ironclad holds the ground, Junk shakes what is under it. If Blitz runs, Junk erases the path. If Phantom hides, Junk turns the hide into dust. He does not apologize. Lately he has been counting seals on the contract. Two of the eleven look like the same handwriting. He has not told anyone yet.
